Golfer’s wife Garcia urges Ryder Cup fans to act
Angela Akins, wife of Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia, called on American fans to show respect to European players during the Ryder Cup tournament.
At the last edition that was held in the United States five years ago, some American fans behaved loudly and unsportsmanlike towards European players. Akins said she hopes the hostile atmosphere will not be repeated at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
He said, “I understand you’re cheering for your team, but let’s cut out the insults. It went too far when I followed Sergio. It ended up verbally attacking a group of guys who were bullying him,” he said. . Akins later said the fans had apologized.
Europe has already launched a magic offensive to placate the home fans at Whistling Straits. Due to travel restrictions, only American fans will attend the game.
This event is held every two years alternately in Europe or the United States. This year, it will host the Whistling Straits track in the US state of Wisconsin. It was initially scheduled for 2020, but has been postponed to this year due to the coronavirus. The last edition in Paris in 2018 was won by Europe, who defeated Team USA 17.5-10.5.
Due to the postponement of the 2020 competition, all subsequent editions will carry over for one year. The 2022 edition will be held in Italy in 2023 and the other two years later in Farmingdale in the United States. In 2023, the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome will host the Ryder Cup.
