So far, WhatsApp users on Android have been able to create unlimited backups. But that will end next month.
no time? Blue News sums it up for you
- WhatsApp backup on Android will soon no longer be allowed to be unlimited.
- Starting next month, the full amount of the backup will count towards the cloud quota.
- However, Google only offers 15GB of cloud storage space for free.
Whatsapp users on Android may soon have to do some cleaning if they want to keep their backups working. As of now, data from WhatsApp backup is not counted towards Google Cloud storage quota.
Because users there actually only have 15 GB of free storage space. That’s three times what Apple offers its customers for free, but that limit is being reached faster than expected, especially with so many photos and videos.
So far, Android users are enjoying the privilege
This is likely to become a severe problem starting in December, 9to5Google reports. From now on, Google will add your WhatsApp backup to your regular cloud storage step by step. This also ends Android users’ privilege over Apple users, because WhatsApp backup has always been part of regular iCloud storage.
If your Android smartphone backup, which only stores WhatsApp data, now exceeds the 15GB limit, you’ll have to either delete the files or get a paid Google subscription. This starts at 2 francs per month for 100GB of cloud storage.
