Google will ditch Qualcomm chips and make processors for Pixel smartphones themselves, 9to5Google writes, citing internal company documents. The first such models may appear in the fall of 2021.
Google Whitechapel Chip develops alongside Samsung, the newspaper notes. The first phones with such processors will be devices codenamed Raven and Oriole – one of which is the Pixel 6, 9to5Google suggests. In the future, the company will integrate its own chips into its Chromebooks.
A Google spokesman declined to comment for this story. The fact that Google and Samsung are developing chips, Axios wrote in April 2020. This would allow the company to compete with Apple, which is also working on its own modem for smartphones.
