Nilufer Gundogan, an independent member of parliament since May 2022, will not run for a new term. It lets you know devotion. To get such an expanded parliamentary membership, the former Wohlt member would have to create his own party, just like Peter Umtzigt.
“I doubted my desire to continue, I was inclined to do so, but it is unrealistic to achieve something in such a short time,” says Gundogan, 46. “The downfall of the government and the elections come too soon. And a year later I would have been ready.
In a statement on Twitter, she wrote that she would look for “other ways to engage in social and public discussion.” And you will announce later what exactly you will do.
Her health also plays a role in the decision not to run for her party. In the fall of 2022, she was partially paralyzed in the face. “If I had to run at this point, it would be such a mental and physical strain that I would kill myself.”
Unacceptable behaviour
In March 2021, Gundogan was elected second on Volt’s list to the House of Representatives. I got 41,352 preferential votes. In Parliament, she stood out for her sharp debating style and firm stance towards the Forum for Democracy, among other things.
And in the spring of 2022, Gundogan was expelled from the party due to allegations of inappropriate behavior towards his colleagues and associates. The legal battle over this is far from over. On Thursday, an Amsterdam court will start proceedings on the merits brought by Gundogan v. Wohlt for defamation and slander.
“I will provide legal evidence of this and will continue to do so until my name is cleared,” she wrote in her statement. “I am doing it for myself and for anyone else to whom this could happen and who might have less strength to fight.”
