Israel felt it had to respond to an attack by Iran a few days ago. Tehran launched about three hundred missiles and drones, almost all of which were launched from the sky.
According to the New York Times, Israeli leaders initially wanted to respond in a big way. They allegedly wanted to strike military targets with fighter jets, including near the capital, Tehran.
Limited attack
Ultimately, Israel abandoned its grand plans, mainly under pressure from US President Joe Biden. He is said to have called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and urged him to present the successful air defense as a victory that no longer needed a response. The British and German Foreign Ministers are also said to have made this invitation.
After the phone call, Netanyahu changed his position. He chose a limited attack with little damage. Israel did not officially claim responsibility. Iran also does not point the finger at Israel publicly, and asserts that only a few have been affected.
Revenge
Israeli officials said the goal is to demonstrate Israel's ability to strike Iran, but the hope is also that Tehran will not have to respond to such a small attack. Iran has not yet threatened retaliation.
