Mendix, part of Siemens and the world leader in low code application development, announces the results of an international study on low code adoption. The research shows that – driven by the pandemic – nearly 70% of respondents in the Netherlands feel the greatest need for faster software development and digitization, and 45% worldwide indicated this. Moreover, 73% of Dutch organizations want to increase the pace of software development over the next two years. For respondents in China and the United States (93%) and (81%), respectively, this is an important ambition. It is very likely that these developments will increase the need for low tokens.
“The State of Low-Code 2021: A Look Back, The Light Ahead” survey, conducted among more than 2,000 IT professionals and leaders in Europe – including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK – and the US and China shows Clearly, interest in low code has increased and accelerated the work of using low code for software development. 77% of all respondents indicated that their organizations already implement a low code. The report confirms that Covid-19 has boosted low code adoption among 83% of organizations (70% in the Netherlands and 81% in Belgium).
Digitization during Covid-19
The pandemic requires a more flexible and digital way of doing business and many organizations and government agencies have chosen low code to help them overcome these challenges. The Netherlands led the way last year with 35% of organizations using low code to develop Covid-19 related apps (versus 19% worldwide). For example, the municipality of Rotterdam has used the low-code platform Mendix to develop a complex digital operation targeting entrepreneurs and freelancers. With a low-code-based application, the municipality was able to quickly provide financial support to those who need it.
The research also shows that during the pandemic, organizations in different regions have implemented low code for a variety of digitization projects. In the Netherlands, for example, a quarter of respondents said they used low code to develop e-commerce solutions (compared to only 16% in the US). In Belgium, 31% used low tokens to develop customer portals or related applications such as chatbots. This was the case for only 9% of Dutch organisations. Low token process automation (RPA) was used in both the Netherlands (30%) and Belgium (38%), while this was less than 20% in all other countries.
Half of business critical apps are built with low code
“Low code is gaining rapid progress from traditional software development and not only helps digitize or automate manual or paper-based processes with ease. Customers like PostNL experience daily how low code can play a role,” says Hans de Visser, Vice President, Product Management at Mendix. critical to the development of business-critical applications. The survey confirms this as organizations surveyed report that more than half of their mission-critical applications are built using low code.We see great potential for low code globally as more and more companies across industries The extensive capabilities of our platform are used to build the most innovative low-code solutions.”
Take advantage of low code
Respondents confirm that they have already reaped the benefits of the main benefits of low token. For example, 64% of Dutch respondents said that their low-code projects are a collaboration between IT and business. Low code was used in 77% of Dutch organizations to replace or convert legacy systems. In addition, low code helped 39% of Dutch organizations reduce software development costs and speed up software development.
De Visser: “Accelerating software development is a necessity now that organizations in various industries realize that traditional software development cannot meet the growing demand. Also, two-thirds of software projects are delivered after the deadline, and the developer shortage will not be resolved any time soon. That’s why it’s great to see organizations embrace low code and see it as a way to help them transform their businesses to be more successful in the future.”
“This research confirms what we have long believed,” said Derek Ross, co-founder and CEO of Mendix. “Low code is the future of software development and Mendix is the way forward. It is agile, expands the pool of development talent, and is designed to collaborate and develop software quickly. Low code is rapidly becoming an essential technology for organizations to succeed in a digital world.”
