Japanese authorities are urging people to stop stockpiling supplies. For example, there is a rush for food, after a warning was issued earlier this week about the possibility of a major earthquake.
Residents of part of the country were then advised to make preparations in anticipation.
Some supermarkets are saying there are shortages of certain products and are imposing restrictions on purchases. On the website of e-commerce giant Rakuten, canned goods, bottled water and portable toilets are among the most searched products.

Japanese media reported that such products are also very popular with other sellers.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warned for the first time Thursday of a possible “super-tectonic earthquake” in the Nankai Trough off the coast, shortly after a magnitude-7.1 quake struck. The site has been hit by very destructive quakes in the past. The government had previously estimated the chance of a major quake in the next 30 years at about 70 percent.
A 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck south of Tokyo yesterday. According to many seismologists, this earthquake was not directly related to the Nankai Trough.
