A 67-year-old man from Klagenfurt fell for a scam. He was contacted by a supposed software employee and, at his request, transferred a large sum of money.
It's unbelievable what happened to a Klagenfurt resident: Previously unknown perpetrators gained remote access to the 67-year-old's laptop and tricked him by pretending to be employees of a software company. They told the man that corruption of the laptop's software could be prevented by installing security software. To do this, the unknown perpetrators caused a pop-up window to appear on the desktop of a Klagenfurt resident containing a phone number and information that the laptop was at risk of data loss.
Thousands of euros were transferred to the Irish account
A Klagenfurt resident tried to call the number and was contacted shortly after by another phone number. The previously unknown perpetrators already had full control of the laptop at this point and pretended to be able to offer an update subscription as employees of the software. A Klagenfurt resident then transferred several thousand euros to an Irish account and the unknown perpetrators ran a program on the victim's laptop and asked him to leave the computer running for an hour.
Klagenfurter became skeptical
After the time had passed, the Software Staff assured us that the laptop was now fine. Shortly afterwards, a Klagenfurt resident became suspicious and contacted his bank. However, the transferred amount could no longer be reversed, which is why the man filed the report.
