Daniil Medvedev is disappointed that he has already lost his leading position in the world rankings. The Russian unexpectedly lost to Gael Monfils on Monday at the Masters at Indian Wells and has to let Novak Djokovic finish first again next week.
Medvedev was supposed to reach at least the semi-finals in the US to maintain his world number one spot, but lost 6-4, 3-6, 1-6 in the third round.
“I always say it’s very hard to beat me when I do my best,” Medvedev, 26, said after his defeat. “But this is the hardest part of tennis to reach this level over and over again.”
“That’s why the big three (Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, editor) are so incredible. Whatever conditions they’re playing, they win so many strange championships or matches. I have to improve in that regard.”
Monfils enjoy their victory
Medvedev only took first place since February 28 and played his first tournament in this mode. Djokovic is now back in the lead without playing. This is partly due to the good game of Monfils, who enjoyed his victory over Medvedev.
“I played really well,” said the French veteran. “I knew I was in great shape and it’s always special to beat the number one seed in the world.” “I moved well, hit the ball well and I’m full of confidence. I hope I can keep the flow going.”
Djokovic is not allowed to enter the United States due to his unvaccinated condition and is missing from Indian Wells, just as he is at the upcoming tournament in Miami. As of April 10, the Serbian will play only his second tournament in 2022 in Monte Carlo.
