Microsoft re-released Voice Recorder for Windows 11 and uses a name from 1990.
With Windows 10, Microsoft introduced the new app called Voice Recorder. This allows you to create and save recordings from a connected microphone. Microsoft is working on a new app for Windows 11, using a name from 1990. The sound recorder is already in Windows 3.0, and the tool celebrates the revival of Windows 11, with new functionality of course.
The new sound recorder in Windows 11 can do just that
Unlike the original, where you can store only 60 seconds of recordings, the new MCA sound recorder no longer has such a limitation. The recorded audio files can be seen on the left side, while the respective file is played visually in the waveform diagram on the right. It is possible to set markers and change the playback speed. Additionally, recordings can be imported and exported, with m4a, mp3, wma, flac and wav file formats supported. Compared to the sound recorder from Windows 10, the new sound recorder in Windows 11 offers the ability to change the recording device at any time with a single click. The previous detour via the audio settings is no longer necessary.
Only Windows Insiders can test the new Sound Recorder app. It’s not clear when this app will be released to all Windows 11 users. Depending on feedback and development status, a comeback could happen this year around the free feature update 22H2. The Voice Recorder will replace the Windows 10 Voice Recorder app. Microsoft is still in the process of updating the built-in Windows apps after there is already a new version of Paint, Notepad, Snipping Tool, and Media Player.

- There was already a voice recorder in Windows 3.0 from 1990, but the new version has a Mica design.
- In addition to displaying the audio file being played in a wave chart, the new audio recorder allows you to select the recording device.
- It is still unclear when the audio recorder will be available to all Windows 11 users. Perhaps with the 22H2 update feature.
