More than 40 migrants have drowned off the coast of Western Sahara in southern Morocco, the Spanish relief agency Caminando Fronteras reported on Twitter.
Some of the bodies were recovered, the rest swallowed up by the sea. 12 others were rescued after their boat sank. Boats carrying migrants from this region usually head to the Spanish Canary Islands.
More than 40,000 migrants, traveling mainly through Morocco, arrived in Spain by sea in 2021, according to the latest figures from Spain’s Ministry of the Interior. This also includes migrants arriving via the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands, the archipelago of which Mallorca also belongs.
According to Caminando Fronteras, about 4,400 migrants died or disappeared while crossing the sea to Spain in 2021. This is the highest number since the organization began tracking numbers in 2015.
