Immediately after the match, the party broke out in Tiel. On Tuesday, our Turkish compatriots had taken to the streets to blow their horns after their victory over Austria, and now both the Turks and the Dutch were in the same boat. Long lines of cars snaked through the streets, and the traffic eventually came to a standstill at the roundabout in Heiligenstraat.
tradition of honking
For people with Turkish background, it is a tradition to celebrate victory by blowing the horn, as it is an expression of joy. This happens not only at football matches, but also at holidays and weddings.
The fact that the Dutch were now also out on the streets was of course a bit of a shame, but the Turkish population in Telin took it sportingly and joined in the celebration. They were proud of their national team and waved flags enthusiastically, just as they had earlier this week.
The police watched the party from a distance and did not have to intervene.
Party in Het Plein
A party was also held on Het Plein in Tiel, where the match was watched collectively on a big screen organised by Café de Merckt in collaboration with Café Tot Straks. After the match the victory was celebrated in a good way.
The Netherlands will meet England in the semi-final on Wednesday, with the match set to kick off at 9pm. The other semi-final will be played on Tuesday evening at 9pm, Spain vs France.
