The new Microsoft Flight Simulator update is available and the most recent regions that have seen significant cosmetic improvements are Germany, Austria and the Swiss Alps. Watch the trailer above for a look at more Germanic castles, cathedrals, and football fields than you can shake.
The free update improves elevation maps and aerial photos for many cities across Germany, including Frankfurt, Bertal and Basel in Switzerland, and Graz and Vienna in Austria. In addition, there are many visual updates of landmarks such as the Berlin TV Tower, Moritzburg Lake Castle, Cologne Cathedral and much more. Probably the “biggest” landmark to get an update, the Matterhorn is the massive Swiss mountain that has claimed the lives of more than 500 climbers.
The update also added handmade reproductions for more than 100 airports in the region, including Stuttgart, Lübeck, Klagenfurt and St Gallen. If you want to test your landing power on small or large axes, new landing challenges have been added, along with new exploration and jungle rides.
The new off-screen terrain caching from Microsoft Flight Simulator will be of interest to gamers looking to increase their frame rate. You can set it to low, medium, high or ultra, and it will cache all the terrain you’re not currently looking at, so if you go outside to peek into your cockpit, it’ll stutter and pop up it wouldn’t be like that. As much as you stare at your forty Germanic castle. The maximum photometric distance has also been increased, which means you can see more from afar in densely populated cities like Frankfurt.
