Nokia has partnered with Swisscom to launch a drone network across Switzerland, with the aim of improving emergency response and infrastructure inspection. According to a joint statement, Nokia will supply 300 drones that Swisscom will operate via a drone-as-a-service (DaaS) network across the country.
DaaS is a business model that allows customers to use drones on demand without purchasing or operating them. The technology allows public safety agencies such as police and fire brigades to request a drone flight from Swisscom Broadcast and access the collected data.
Improving emergency response and infrastructure screening
The technology could also enable remote inspection of power lines, solar panels or oil and gas infrastructure. “Anywhere you don’t need to send a human because it could be dangerous, you can start by sending or requesting a drone,” says Thomas Eder, head of embedded wireless communications at Nokia. This could lead to increased efficiency in emergency response and infrastructure inspections.
In addition to military applications, drones are increasingly being tested in areas such as delivering goods, inspecting infrastructure or agriculture. However, concerns about surveillance, noise and safety remain, despite more laws being introduced to regulate the use of drones.
Data Protection and Compliance
Nokia and Swisscom have both confirmed their commitment to cooperating with aviation and spectrum regulators and adhering to data protection laws. “If there is a beach or a swimming pool where video recordings should be avoided, no-fly zones could be established,” says Eder. This highlights the importance of ensuring that drone technology is used responsibly.
