NOS commentator Frank Wellard criticised England manager Gareth Southgate on Saturday ahead of England's European Championship quarter-final against Switzerland. Fireworks were set off from the stands and the commentator was unable to resist the fierce reaction.
“We just saw Southgate come out and give some attention to the fans,” Wellard said in his commentary, after which he noticed the fireworks. “The fireworks on the pitch for this game. You only get it once in an England game, the fireworks. And then we saw it.”

England have yet to impress at this European Championship, while expectations are very high, as Willard also points out. “There is something expected of them,” Willard said in his comment. “The criticism is still there and it has been discussed a lot when it comes to England.”
The Three Lions topped their group with five points in a group that included Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia, but drew disappointingly against both the Danes and the Slovenes (1-1 and 0-0 respectively). In the eighth final against Slovakia, England also crawled through the eye of a needle, after Jude Bellingham scored the equaliser 1-1 in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Harry Kane then scored the winner for England in extra time.
