Novak Djokovic will meet Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the group stage of the ATP Finals in Turin next week. Medvedev’s compatriot Andrei Rublev is also in this group.
The 35-year-old Djokovic is the number 8 in the world and meets the three highest ranked tennis players in the world. Group president Tsitsipas came in third, Medvedev in fifth and Rublev in seventh in the world.
In the other group, Rafael Nadal, who leads the group, will compete with Norway’s Casper Ruud and Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime of the United States. The best tennis players from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew last week with an abdominal muscle injury. The Spaniard was injured during the Masters Championships in Paris. There, Holger Ron beat Djokovic in the final. The Dane is the reserve number one in the ATP Finals.
The year-end tournament for the top eight players of 2022 begins on Sunday and runs for a week. And last year, the final was won by German Alexander Zverev, who suffered a serious ankle injury at Roland Garros in the spring and has not played since. Hopes to return in December.
Wesley Kohlhoff
In the ATP Finals double tournament, Wesley Koolhoff will compete in the group stage with his British partner Neil Skopsky against Nick Kyrgios, among others. The Australian is forming a duo with fellow countryman Tanasi Kokinakis in Turin.
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis surprisingly won the Australian Open doubles at the start of this year, allowing them to make their debut in the year-end top eight pairs tournament. Kyrgios had already finished his solo season, but decided to travel to Turin anyway.
Kolhof and Skopski will also compete against Croatians Nikola Miktic and Matt Pavic. With Miktik, Kollhoff won the ATP Finals in 2020. American Austin Krajesek and Ivan Dodig of Croatia are also competing in the group stage.
Koelhoff (33) has been No. 1 in the world in doubles since Monday. He has already won seven titles this year.
In the other set of doubles, Jean-Julien Roger Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador faces Rajiv Ram/Joe Salisbury, Lloyd Glasspool/Harry Heliovara and Marcel Granollers/Horacio Zeballos.
The doubles tournament also kicks off on Sunday.
