Emma Hayes is officially the new national coach of the United States. The US Soccer Federation has confirmed the arrival of the current Chelsea coach. Hayes will join Team USA after the season ends in England.
Hayes announced earlier this month that he would leave Chelsea after this season. The 47-year-old has been on the sidelines of the English club since 2012. Since then, it has won the FA Cup six times, the League Cup twice, the Spring Series once and the Community Shield once. Hayes has been named Coach of the Season six times. In 2021, she was inducted into the WSL Hall of Fame.
Chelsea had already announced that Hayes was looking for “a new opportunity outside of the women’s soccer league and club soccer”, after which rumors quickly spread about a national coaching position in the United States. So now it’s official. “It is a great honor to have the opportunity to coach the most amazing team in the history of football,” Hayes said.
“I have dreamed of coaching the USA National Team for a long time, so to have this opportunity is a dream come true. I know there is work to do to achieve our goals of winning consistently at the highest levels,” the new coach said. “And to achieve that will take dedication.” And the commitment and cooperation of the players, employees and everyone at the US Soccer Federation.”
Hayes will join America after the season in England. She will officially join the team two months before the 2024 Games. Until then, Twyla Kilgore will remain the interim coach of the national team. She would then become Hayes’ assistant.
