A new Lelystad Airport Hotel may be built if the airport also gets the green light for expansion. Local councilor Piet van Dijk made the announcement during a committee meeting at Lelystad Council on Tuesday evening. By expansion, we mean the arrival of commercial flights to Lelystad Airport. A majority of House members indicated at the end of January that they opposed this.
For a long time, the future of the current Lelystad Airport Hotel, which opened its doors in 2005, was uncertain. The then owner expected that holiday flights would be operated from the airport in the not too distant future. But these plans did not materialize and therefore no passengers arrived.
The current building has not been used as a real hotel for a long time. Student pilots, refugees and migrant workers found shelter there. Until the Carranza Group, the current owner of the building, a few years ago approached the municipality with building plans for a significant expansion. They got the green light Tuesday evening. The group also agrees with the municipality's approach.
Difficulty in deciding
The local businessman – who does not wish to explain further to Omroep Flevoland – is still having difficulty making a decision. Because the new hotel, which is more than thirty meters high – and which has a piece of forest that must be cut down for construction – will not fit into the established zoning plan.
But according to Van Dijk, the design of the new hotel likely to be built is within standards. We are still waiting for the green light to expand the airport.
