The Orange Lionesses qualified for next year's European Championship in Switzerland on Tuesday. It didn't look like that for long, but Vivianne Miedema saved the day with a vital goal ten minutes from time.
The Netherlands missed a great opportunity on Friday to qualify for the European Championship. A home win over Italy would have been enough, but no goals were scored in Sittard. That meant a result in Norway was essential. That also applies to the Norwegians, who had to keep Italy and Finland behind them.
After a difficult start, the Netherlands were able to take the initiative. This created chances for Daniel van de Donk and Jackie Groenen, who both fired wide. However, it would be the Norwegians who would take the lead. Kirsten Kasparij was unable to clear a corner on the hour mark and saw Caroline Graham Hansen take the lead (1-0).
Midima stands
This meant that the Netherlands' mission had changed. He no longer tried to keep things closed, but scored. National team coach Andries Jonker, with Lynn Wilms and Katja Snoeijs in place of Casparij and Esmee Brugts, tried to control the game, but it didn't work anymore. That was not what Miedema expected.
And when he had to, the striker stepped up again. Miedema was in the right place to meet Chasity Grant's cross and give the Netherlands a vital equaliser. For Miedema, it was her 96th goal in 120 games and a very valuable one (1-1).
