The US government has reached an agreement with Nigerian internet fraudster Hushpuppi, who is on trial in the United States. The prison sentence for Ramon Abbas (38 years old), known as “Hushpuppi”, was reduced to eleven years.
Good cleaner
Popular Instagram user Hushpuppy has appealed to US Judge Otis Wright for a lenient prison sentence for allegedly being one of the top cleaners at the Central Valley Prison where he has been on remand since his arrest in 2021. He also maintains good communication with other inmates.
The verdict in the criminal case against Hushpuppi is scheduled for September 21. US prosecutors asked a federal judge to sentence Hushpuppi to 11 years in prison. After his release, he will be subject to supervision for three years.
'different person'
In a memorandum filed on September 5, his attorney, Louis Shapiro, said: “He is currently in prison cleaning windows and bathrooms, and has received excellent character evaluations.” Shapiro said his client has become a different person in prison and should receive a reduced sentence of about two years. Hushpuppi's lawyer also noted that his client has three minor children in London, the United States and Dubai to take care of, in addition to his ailing parents in Nigeria.
The prosecution and defense deliberated on the appropriate punishment for Houshpubi. Prosecutors are seeking 11 years in prison, $2.2 million in damages and fines.
Dubai
Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai in June 2020 at the request of the FBI and was later extradited to prison in the United States while his trial continued. He is suspected of an Internet fraud that allegedly stole $430 million.
On Instagram, he keeps his 2.4 million followers closely informed of his ultra-luxurious spending habits. His twelve sports cars were confiscated. More than $37 million in cash was found in his apartment.
