Phishing emails are now so good that almost everyone falls for them (almost) at some point. The sender looks good, no typos – yet the email turns out to be fake. PostNL now has a simple solution.
Cybercriminals who try to scam you via phishing emails like to pose as package services. Makes sense, because we order ourselves by mistake and are bombarded with mail from PostNL, DHL, GLS, FedEx, etc. “Your package is registered, set up, uploaded, and is on its way.” Then suddenly a phishing email appears.
In PostNL, you can now enter a recognizable code, word or phrase that will help you identify real emails: the anti-phishing code. The name of your pet, for example, or your favorite dish. Only emails containing this word are from PostNL. Simple but effective: Some cryptocurrency platforms already use it, but when it comes to parcel services, PostNL is ahead of the curve.
This is how I set the code:
Go to uw.postnl.nl/account and log in. Then click on “All data” and go to “Anti-phishing icon”. Click 'Set' and enter a symbol, word or phrase of your choice – 'hamburger' for example, or 'snotje': something PostNL itself wouldn't put in its email, and no one else would think of. From now on, you will see this word in a gray bar at the top of all emails you receive from PostNL.
If you're already logged into your PostNL account, this link will take you directly to the settings screen to get your anti-phishing code. The setup is not yet included in PostNL's mobile apps.
