The Mercedes E-Class of the W213 generation combines innovative technology in a classic form.
Elegant design, economical driving technology and comprehensive driver assistance systems are the most important components of the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. In addition, the model retains its reliable qualities as a comfortable, spacious and quiet travel vehicle.
Mercedes E-Class bodywork
The 2016 E-Class will have model code “213”. It shares its modular MRA platform with, among others, the C-Class of the same construction period. Available as a Limousine (W213), Estate (S213) and All-Terrain (X213), the 213 Series has a wheelbase of 2.93 meters and a length of more than 4.9 metres.
There are different versions with a simple, classic, modern or sporty look. All variants can be identified by the shape and design of the grid. Full LED headlights are standard. Multi-beam LED headlights, an open roof or panoramic roof, and a power liftgate are factory options.
In 2020, the E-Class will receive a facelift with a more aggressive CLS-style front view. In the sedan, narrow taillights give way to wide ones.
Mercedes E-Class interior
The interior is spacious, quiet, elegant and beautifully appointed. The base model has analogue instruments and a separate infotainment screen. The optional Widescreen Cockpit, with two 12.3-inch displays and adjustable multi-color mood lighting, provides a modern look. New driver assistance systems enable partially autonomous driving, while Pre-Safe and Car-to-X technology provide early warning of danger.
Equipment starts with standard cloth seats and continues through comfortable leather-trimmed seats to the sporty AMG interior. The options list is almost S-Class worthy, including multi-contour active seats, heated armrests (!), interior fragrances, Burmester audio and Designo personalization.
The facelifted version for 2020 comes with a new steering wheel, updated instrument panel and MBUX infotainment system with augmented reality navigation and “Hey Mercedes” voice control. Some owners complain about rattles and squeaks from the dashboard and door panels. Electronics malfunctions sometimes occur, and can usually be remedied using software.

The engine range includes four-, six- and eight-cylinder direct-injection engines with single or twin turbochargers, complemented by plug-in hybrids and later mild hybrids. The petrol range starts with the E 200/E 250/E 350 (184-299 hp) and the plug-in hybrid model E 350 e/E 300 e (286-320 hp).
Under the hood of the E 400/E 450/E 43 AMG is a six-cylinder turbo engine (333-401 hp). The E 53 AMG has an inline-six with turbocharger and electric compressor (435 hp). The top E 63/E 63 S AMG models have a twin-turbo 4.0 V8 (571-612 hp).
In the diesel range, there is a choice between the four-cylinder E 200 d/E 220 d/E 300 d (150-245 hp) and the four-cylinder hybrid E 300 de (306 hp). The E 350 d has a 3.0 V6 (258 hp). From 2018, the E 350 d/E 400 d option is available with the six-cylinder engine (286-340 hp).
In gasoline engines, inlet and injector contamination are potential points of concern. With a used hybrid vehicle, it is wise to check the condition of the battery pack. With a 2.0 diesel engine, valve control and timing chain can cause problems. Other diesel problems include faulty NOx sensors, water pump leaks and dirty emissions systems.

Depending on the version and engine, the E-Class has rear-wheel drive or 4Matic(+) all-wheel drive. The petrol and diesel engines, including the hybrid model and the E 43 AMG, are mated to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic transmission with torque converter. The E 200 was sold briefly with a six-speed manual transmission.
The E 53 AMG has the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G nine-speed automatic transmission, while the E 63 AMG has the AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed automatic transmission. The 9G-Tronic should shift up and down smoothly and quickly. Regular oil changes keep your transmission healthy for as long as possible.

The 213 Series features independent multi-link front and rear suspension. The standard structure has convenient adjustment. The Dynamic Body Control suspension has been lowered by 15 mm and has adjustable shock absorbers. The Air Body Control air suspension with continuous damping and automatic height control provides the best of both worlds.
The sports suspensions on Mercedes-AMG versions also use air suspension, and compared to many other super sedans, it's not uncomfortably harsh or stiff. Finally, Direct Steering refers to a power steering system with a variable transmission.
Suspension wear sometimes occurs with increasing age and odometer reading. On vehicles equipped with air suspension, watch for leaking air springs and worn air pumps.
Which Mercedes E-Class should I own?
In the Netherlands, the E-Class is mainly sold with four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. Entry-level engines do more than adequately, and the most powerful four-cylinder and plug-in hybrids leave nothing to be desired in terms of performance. For an engaging engine sound and superior performance, nothing beats six and eight cylinders.
Traditionally, the entry-level model of the E-Class (hub covers, fabric, air conditioning) is respectable but barebones. The E-Class is at its best and as modern as Avantgarde, Exclusive or AMG Line with its “widescreen cockpit” and as many active driver assistance systems as possible. For infotainment connoisseurs, MBUX is a better option than the well-functioning but dated Comand online system.
Should it be a Mercedes E-Class?
In a world dominated by electric cars, crossovers and SUVs, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class stands tall. The 2016 to 2023 build series serves conservative customers who do not (yet) need ultra-modern embellishments under the hood and in the interior. On the other hand, with the right drivetrain, the right options and the right driver assistance systems, it's a progressive car that, as a used car, is on par with new cars from many other brands.
Combined with timeless design, spacious interior space and comfortable driving characteristics, the 213 Series has something to offer everyone. Provided that the wallet is full enough, because even used, all this beauty is not cheap.
