The Republican Party lost its seat in the US House of Representatives to the Democrats. Democrat Tom Suozzi won a special election in New York to succeed ousted Republican George Santos.
Santos lost his seat in early December after a series of scandals. He was in Parliament at the time for less than a year. Shortly after being sworn in, he became controversial over alleged lies about his resume and accusations that he defrauded donors.
The 35-year-old Santos is said to have claimed during his election campaign, among other things, that he had the official support of former President Donald Trump. Santos previously campaigned for Trump when he was running for re-election.
The US Congress agreed to dismiss Santos. He became the first Republican ever to give up his seat in the US Parliament. A special by-election was needed to find his successor.
Suozzi defeated his Republican opponent Mazi Belep. He won in Long Island County, where he was born and raised. Before Santos took office, Susi was also a member of the House of Representatives for six years.
Republicans still have a majority in the House of Representatives. The “Grand Old Party” holds 219 seats, compared to 213 seats for the Democrats.
