The US Supreme Court will review the attorney general’s request for summary judgment in the case against former President Donald Trump. The prosecutor is asking for a temporary ruling to determine whether Trump should be tried or not.
The Supreme Court must decide whether Trump can be convicted on these charges. The court and Trump’s lawyers must respond to the request by December 20.
Prosecutor Jack Smith’s request is extraordinary. But he said a quick decision was in the “national interest” and “important for preserving democracy.” Otherwise, there is a high probability that the trial will not begin on March 4. Therefore, the trial may come sooner than Trump would have liked.

That time is difficult because Trump is a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections in the United States. A day later, primaries will be held in a number of states. Therefore, postponing the case will be beneficial for Trump, because if he wins, he can suspend his trial.
Trump’s lawyers say Smith’s request violates the US Constitution. Trump is accused of, among other things, election fraud and incitement before storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
