Since the end of 2023, Microsoft's Windows 11 operating system has also been able to configure RGB lighting for the computer system, provided that the function is supported by the hardware. With Asus, “Dynamic Lighting” in Windows now has a new heavyweight partner.
Windows Settings instead of Armory Crate
Until now, RGB chips on Asus motherboards could only be controlled or deactivated using additional software, specifically the manufacturer's own Armoury Crate solution. The latest BIOS beta for current Intel LGA 1700 and AMD AM5 motherboards now gives the option to use Microsoft Dynamic Lighting for control as well.
Tom Warren became aware of the new job. the edgewho shared his discovery on X. It remains to be seen exactly which chipsets will benefit from the new feature at the moment. Asus has so far only distributed new BIOS versions for chipsets from the Intel 700 series and AMD 600 series – that is, the latest generation.
So far, manufacturer support for dynamic lighting is mixed.
Even with Asus as an additional partner, Microsoft is still far from the goal of being able to control the entire light show in a central location in the home.
The list of participating partners is still rather short so far and is mainly limited to peripheral manufacturers such as Razer, SteelSeries or Logitech. In addition, there is often talk of planned compatibility with future products, for example for laptops from Acer or HP.
According to the listing, Asus is the first motherboard manufacturer to offer support for dynamic lighting. The partner list clearly mentions the Taiwanese manufacturer's ROG series, and other ROG-branded devices are likely to follow.
Meanwhile, there’s no hint of competition in Microsoft’s list, which the Redmond software giant rarely seems to update. For example, MSI’s announced efforts at Computex to make its graphics card lineup compatible with Microsoft Dynamic Lighting are not mentioned at all.
