Rules of law:
The European Commission presented on Wednesday the Rule of Law Report 2024. This report examines developments in the rule of law in all Member States in a systematic, objective and consistent manner.
Compared to the first annual Rule of Law Report 2020, Member States and the EU as a whole are better prepared to detect, prevent and address new challenges.
For the first time, the report also includes chapters for four candidate countries – Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. In addition, there are separate reports for current Member States.
The report on the state of the rule of law in the Netherlands can be found here.
The Committee makes a number of recommendations to the Netherlands. For example, the shortage of staff in the legal system should be addressed, there should be a cooling-off period for ministers after their term as Minister/Secretary of State ends, stricter transparency rules regarding lobbying of the government and parliament, and strengthening the public broadcaster. The advice of the Council of State on the rule of law should be followed up appropriately.
