For many years, Nord Stream 1 has been essential for gas supplies to Western Europe and especially to Germany. Last fall, Russia slowly began to turn off the tap. After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the tap was closed even more.
There hasn’t been any gas flowing through it at all for several months and it will remain so for now. The damage to the pipeline is so great that repair is almost impossible. Moreover, the EU does not want to use Russian energy in the future.
Nord Stream 2, which was also damaged, was not put into service. This is because Germany and the European Union have never given all the necessary permits.
