SBB has ordered five additional Giruno high-speed trains from Stadler
Swiss transport company SBB has ordered an additional five Gerono high-speed trains from Stadler for the planned expansion of its international services to Italy.
Like the 29 Gerono trains of the first series, the trains will also be entirely manufactured at the production plant in Busnang, Switzerland. The Gerono train, also called SMILE by Stadler, is the first high-speed train in Europe designed completely unobstructed and with a low floor.
Increased demand for train travel
Demand for train travel between Switzerland and Italy has risen steadily in recent years. This success has encouraged the Italian company Trenitalia and SBB to work together to strengthen and expand the international offer, especially on the Gotthard line. This will require five additional train sets that Stadler will produce at the end of 2025. This relates to the call of an option in the previously signed contract.
Gerono for SBB
The current 29 Girunos were ordered in 2014 and delivered in 2021. Trains now run between Basel/Zurich to Lugano/Milan and then on to Genoa, Bologna and Venice. An additional seven Gerono trains have been ordered in 2022. The first vehicles are expected to be delivered during this year and are expected to travel through Switzerland and Germany via Basel from 2026.
This high-speed train is 202 meters long and has a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour. The train has 405 seats, including 117 first class seats and 288 second class seats. The coupe is equipped with special windows that allow mobile phone signals, Wi-Fi, sockets at every seat, spacious luggage racks, travel information screens and modern sustainable LED lighting. The train is suitable and permitted for use in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Italy.
