ALTEN – Schiller’s Café will screen “Green Book” on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. Tickets cost eight euros.
It’s the 1960s in the southern United States. At a time when racial segregation is still a big problem. Racial segregation laws kept black and white citizens separated in public institutions. However, it is the time when black pianist Don Shirley tours here.
Don Shirley is looking for a driver and bodyguard for his tour. That’s why he hired goalkeeper Tony Vallelonga, also known as Tony Lip. The contrast between the two could not be greater. Don is a sophisticated, highly educated black man and Tony is a rude, uneducated white man. This creates a somewhat awkward atmosphere between the two. During the tour, Tony becomes increasingly disturbed by the racism Don faces every day. Due to the intense contact between Don and Tony, they have developed a special bond.
Inspired by a true story, this film won multiple Academy Awards and Golden Globes thanks to the brilliant performances of Mahershala Ali as Don Shirley and Viggo Mortensen as Tony Lip.
