Martinez is on the injured list, and Oviedo replaced him
Carlos Martinez has, officially, thrown his last ball for the regular season and there is very little chance he will make a comeback even if the Cardinal does a long playoff tour – if they do participate in the qualifiers at all.
Martinez was diagnosed Thursday with the dreaded (left) leaning fatigue he suffered during his last standoff Wednesday at the 12-3 disaster in Kansas City where he allowed eight runs. The 29-year-old right-hand player has been put on the injured list for 10 days, and Johan Oviedo, who was to be raised on Sunday, joined the club a few days earlier and will be working off the playing field for the five-game series. With Milwaukee Brewers, which starts Thursday evening at Busch Stadium.
Director Mike Sheldt, while discussing Martinez’s status, said that he would never “ever assume” that Martinez could no longer be shown this season. “But this is not favorable,” Scheldt said. “Even if we succeed at that depth, it is unlikely.”
Jugs routinely have a month or more with such an injury.
“Obviously it will affect him in the next several weeks. We don’t expect him to do much of anything,” Scheldt said.
