Four people died in a hospital fire in northern Germany. The hospital reported on Friday that at least 24 people were injured. The police reported that a number of them were in critical condition.
The fire broke out in the town of Olzen, located in the state of Lower Saxony, on Thursday at 10:45 pm for an unknown reason. The fire spread to patients' rooms. Upon arrival, emergency services saw flames on the third floor. A lot of smoke was also released.
The hospital was evacuated, and the fire brigade extinguished the fire. German media reported that some patients were taken out of their rooms using stairs. Three victims died instantly. One person was transferred to another hospital and died there. More than 140 emergency services personnel were at the scene.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. According to the police, the damage to the hospital is estimated at more than one million euros. The hospital reported that accepting patients has been suspended until next Friday.
