A woman from Bongao was robbed of a huge sum of money by fraudsters. The perpetrators were able to deduct €19,000 from the woman’s account using SMS phishing.
A 31-year-old woman from Bongao has fallen victim to unknown scammers. They gained access to the woman’s bank account using a sophisticated SMS scam. I was able to deduct €19,000.
Pongauerin is falling victim to SMS scammers
On Monday, the woman received a text message telling her that her account had expired, according to police. She was then asked to register using the link provided. Without suspecting it was a scam, the 31-year-old clicked on the link and followed the instructions.
The scammers debit 19 thousand euros from the account
The next day, she received a call telling her that there were multiple transfer orders and that they could only be canceled by entering a code. In good faith, the woman tried to stop the supposed requests through the bank’s app. However, nearly €19,000 was debited from her account without her knowledge. The investigation is ongoing.
