Snapchat has officially released a paid subscription, the company said on Wednesday. Subscription costs users 4 euros per month. Snapchat + is not yet available in the Netherlands, but it is available in other European countries.
The subscription was released in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Snapchat writes that other countries will follow at a later time. It is not known when the turn of the Netherlands will come.
It’s the first time parent company Snap has attempted to monetize Snapchat in any other way, besides selling ads. Snapchat itself writes that a subscription offers a range of “exclusive and experimental features”. Sometimes these features are available for paid members first and much later for free users.
according to the edge Snapchat + introduces mostly cosmetic changes initially. This way people can customize the app icon. It is also possible to see which of the followers have viewed the same story on Snapchat more than once and some people can be labeled as “best friend”. They will then be at the top of the chat list.
People who pay for extra features will still see ads. According to Snapchat, this remains the most important form of revenue for the company.
