- Sony announced Wednesday that the PS5 has the largest console launch of any of its consoles.
- The early success of the PS5 has been a problem for consumers, as the console has been consistently sold out since its launch on November 12th.
- Sony says more PlayStation 5 consoles will be available before the end of 2020.
If you had trouble finding the PlayStation 5 this fall, you are not alone. In fact, the lack of PS5 inventory has been one of the biggest stories of the season, but although countless consumers are still waiting anxiously for their chance to get a console for themselves or as a gift for someone else, Sony revealed on Wednesday that the PS5 launch was in November 12 (and November 19 in some regions) “biggest console launch ever”.
We still don’t have actual sales numbers, but we do know Sony moved 7.6 million PS4 consoles in its financial launch year. In a recent call to investors, Sony Chief Financial Officer Hiro Totoki said the company is “aiming to exceed” these unit sales in the first year of the PS5’s life cycle, and the PS5 appears to be well on its way to doing so.

Sony shared the news about the record success of the PS5 on Twitter while simultaneously confirming that more consoles will be available before the end of the year, although there are no specific details:
We want to thank gamers everywhere for the release of the PS5, our biggest console launch ever. Demand for the PS5 is unprecedented, so we wanted to confirm that more PS5 stock will reach retailers before the end of the year – please keep in touch with local retailers.

Pre-orders on the PS5 sold out almost immediately after it started in September, and since then, consumers have been desperate to update retailers’ websites and follow Twitter accounts to try to pounce on any new stock that appears online. Without a coordinated strategy from Sony, everyone is left to their own devices, and this has resulted in frustration from every corner of the internet. Scalpers has only made matters worse, with one seller group able to purchase more than 3,000 PS5 consoles over the past two weeks.
At this point, if you are not willing to pay more than the retail price, you will need a plan if you want to have any chance at all to register your PS5. First and foremost, make sure you have an account on every major retailer website, from Amazon to Best Buy to GameStop to Target to Walmart. You need to verify ASAP, and it wouldn’t be possible if you didn’t sign into the online PS5 units that are going up for sale.
You can also try following Twitter accounts that post about new stock as soon as it arrives, such as @Wario 64, @IGNDealsAnd the @Video contests. Not only will they share information from retailers about when they expect to receive more consoles, but they are often the first to appear on the scene when more inventory arrives.
At the end of the day, it will take luck and dedication to buy the PS5 before the end of the year, but we know at least that Sony plans to keep shipping consoles throughout the holiday season.
