The self-anticipated tool from Spotify, a voice-activated music player known colloquially as Car Thing, appeared on a few in-app launches that it discovered Mac rumors Collaborator Steve Moser, who found the images in Spotify’s app code. These copies closely match photos of the actual transaction filed as part of documents submitted by the FCC, which the edge mentioned Back in January.
Thanks to these offerings, we have a much cleaner look at Spotify Car Thing’s advanced design, which includes a large button on the right, a color screen and four buttons on the top. The former official company returned when the product was officially announced in 2019 and showed a much smaller screen.
However, Spotify’s design has since moved closer to smart display style, which makes sense given that it now looks more like the miniature infotainment display you’ll find in a modern car. These new renders show the screen and a possible interface design, as well as various mounting models to connect the device to different parts of the dashboard.
It is not known when or even if Spotify intends to officially launch the product. The company’s February event, where it detailed its new level of Hi-Fi streaming, came and went without any new information about Car Thing, and the device was announced in 2019 as a simple test product to help Spotify understand users’ better listening habits while traveling.
So there is no official product name, potential release date, or any other information about whether it will exit Spotify’s test lab and become a consumer car. But the updated design and FCC documentation – and presentations in-app now – suggest the product may have a future. We just don’t know what it looks like now.
