Women are no longer allowed to appear in Afghan dramas and soap operas. The Taliban announced this in a list of religious guidelines to the media published on Sunday.
The instructions come from the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. Now female readers must wear a headscarf. Films that are not in line with “Afghan values” will no longer be tolerated. Men should wear appropriate clothing. He did not say exactly what that means.
The rules are the latest in a long list of measures that limit women’s freedoms. Since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in August, they have also banned women from studying and playing sports.
The last time the Taliban were in power in Afghanistan, from 1996 to 2001, television was banned altogether. At that time, women were also not allowed to work.
