Belgian tennis star Kim Clijsters will return to the WTA Championship at the end of this month in Miami. The 37-year-old Clijsters received a wildcard for the Miami Open, which she won in 2005 and 2010. The Belgian last participated in the Florida event in 2012.
Clijsters returned as a tennis star for the second time last year, more than seven years after her last game. Due to physical problems and the Coronavirus, the previous number one in the world hasn’t played much yet. Last year, I only played in Dubai, Acapulco and New York at the US Open. Clijsters always lost in the first round. She skipped the Australian Open last month.
Clijsters, who lives with her family in the US, now returns to Miami and after that also takes part in the Charleston Dirt Championship for the first time. Current number 1054 in the world also received a wildcard for this event. “I look forward to getting back on the right track,” Clijsters said.
In Miami, a limited number of spectators are permitted along the runways. “We are very happy that Kim is back in Miami,” said tournament director James Blake. “Often times you don’t have the opportunity to see someone who has been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.”
