There were huge protests in Mallorca against the negative consequences of tourism. According to the police, 20,000 people took to the streets of the capital Palma to express their disgust at the increasing excesses.
Under the slogan “Less tourism, more life”, the protesters are demanding a change of course. According to the organization, the current situation has pushed the island to the brink of collapse. Natural resources have been severely damaged and housing for locals is becoming an increasing problem as tourists buy up homes.
Your luxury, our misery
Protesters held up signs reading “Let's change course and put limits on tourism” and “Your well-being, our misery.” Many of the protest signs were in English, so tourists could also read about the growing discontent in the Balearic Islands.
Last year, 17.8 million tourists came to Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, a record number. This number is expected to continue to increase if the policy does not change. Less than 1.25 million people live in the archipelago.
In Barcelona, among other places, residents have been taking to the streets for some time to demonstrate against mass tourism, mainly because of the impact of tourism on the housing crisis. Landlords choose to rent their homes to tourists because they can then earn more money. Spaniards are sometimes evicted from their homes overnight.
