Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been secretly appointed to a number of ministerial positions during the coronavirus pandemic. This happened without the knowledge of some members of the Cabinet. Australian media reported this on Monday. Current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sought legal advice on the course of events and is conducting an investigation.

Morrison was appointed health secretary in 2020 alongside current minister Greg Hunt. This could have been done to prevent the transfer of power to one person during the pandemic. In principle, this is a legal move in Australia. But Morrison was also appointed Treasury Secretary, unbeknownst to Secretary of State Matthias Kormann, who held the position. As minister of raw materials, Morrison had also used his position to halt a controversial project, Australia’s ABC reported.

Albanian Prime Minister thinks the situation is strange. “This is not a local football club,” he told a news conference. “This is the Australian government that has kept people ignorant of the division of ministerial responsibilities.” Al-Albani wonders about the results of the ministerial positions that Morrison held. “Maybe that’s why we didn’t order enough vaccines,” he said. “Maybe the health minister thought the prime minister would order them, while the prime minister thought the minister was the same.” He described the course of events as “contempt” for democratic processes.

A spokesman for the governor-general, who has appointed Morrison three times as a minister, said it was up to the government itself whether or not to make public which ministers were present and whether they had portfolios. Morrison, who served as Australia’s prime minister from 2018 to last May, has not yet commented on the reports.
