The direct ICE line between Amsterdam and Basel will disappear after July 15 and will not return in 2025 and 2026. This means that after many decades, the last-day train between the Netherlands and Switzerland will no longer exist, and travelers will likely choose plane or car. However, the Nightjet will continue on this route.
From Schiphol, KLM flies to Basel four times a day, and easyJet flies up to three times a day.
The schedule is getting very tight
The ICE timetable to Basel, which runs daily, is already very tight. Due to long-term works, first between Frankfurt and Mannheim and then between Arnhem and Duisburg, it will not be possible to operate the train from 16 July.
But even after the work is finished, the train will not return for the time being, SBB (Swiss Railways) confirmed to Treinreizen.nl. As a result, ICE trains coming from the Netherlands will henceforth go no further than Frankfurt.
It is possible that some ICE centers will continue to be located in Munich in the future. New ICE 3neo equipment could now be available from the summer, and several train sets suitable for Dutch Railways. This is still under consideration.
After July 15, passengers can only travel to Zurich by night train without changing trains. However, new rail company GoVolta is working on plans for a new, slower daytime train to Basel. However, these plans are not final yet.
