With the arrival of the BMW i5, the competition for the title of “Best Electric Travel Limousine” is wide open once again. For BMW, a new model is only really successful if it's better than a Mercedes, so we let the EQE take over. The Lucid Air is the surprising exotic from the US. We experience space, flexibility and comfort.
At 4.98 meters tall, the Lucid Air is located between… Mercedes EQ E (4.95 metres) and BMW i5 (5.05 m). Therefore, we have the highest expectations regarding legroom in the BMW i5. This is achieved with ease. You'll be fine in the back seat of the i5, although the person in the middle will be in bad shape.

The fact that the i5 has petrol siblings is evident by the essentially redundant central tunnel, which significantly limits legroom. Although the Lucid is wider, it's also lower. If you just look at the dimensions, the EQE is inferior in every way. And yet it happened Mercedes Make the most of the available space. The 3.12m wheelbase is enormous, so the smaller EQE has more legroom at the back than the i5. This lead gives away due to its internal width and low body. Both greatly restrict your freedom of movement.

Clear air space
the Clear The Air is a true American and outshines each of its opponents with a space where everyone feels comfortable. Whether you eat a lot of hamburger or a little, whether you're short or tall, you'll sit like a king. Even in the middle of the back seat there is no need to suffer. Before you sit down, you have to go through many bends. If you don't want to hit your head when going in and out, you should take a limbo dancing course.

We're pleased with the Air's boot space: in the 'real' luggage compartment at the back you can store 456 litres, and it also has a huge boot for another 283 litres.

Electric car and caravan: not a good combination
Who considers himself an prince with Lucidair He saw a mobile home traveling across Europe, and his dream was cruelly interrupted. Lucid can't yet pull a simple folding cart or furniture box. The Mercedes is also not an ideal holiday car, with a small boot size of 430kg and a braked trailer weighing 750kg. But you are allowed to install a roof box weighing 100 kilos.
The BMW i5 has a nice 490-litre boot, but we think it doesn't have a boot. The empty space under the hood isn't filled, and it's a shame that BMW installed a massive cover panel above it. In all three cars, the rear seat backrest can be folded down; With BMW and Mercedes in three parts, with Lucid in two unequal parts. The Air also has a ski slot.
With American cars, we look more critically at the finish, because it is usually at a somewhat lower level than that of European brands. Lucid has partly done its homework: the finish is good and the materials are nice. However, the hood and all the doors do not fit perfectly into the bodywork. This is avenged in the next chapter.
Lucid Air falls through the cracks for a moment
The average Lucid Air door seals will break you badly when driving on the highway. That's not nice at this time of year, as after a trip in the Lucid you're quickly tempted to call the district bosses together. Even with the seat heater on the Sambal setting, the heating at nursing home temperatures and the steering wheel turned, the cold passes through your body. In addition, the air conditioner does not always work optimally, causing windows to fog up quickly. Wind noise also suffers from clumsily installed doors.
The Mercedes EQE is the quietest car according to measurements, but the BMW i5 is the car that's best suited to your hearing. The i5's sound impression is best over long distances. Nothing vibrates, you don't hear the wind blowing around the car, rolling noises are kept to a minimum, and the engine is very quiet. The second feature is the comfortable seats built into the test car, on which you can sit comfortably for hours.
Comfort Mercedes EQE
The Mercedes has optional sports seats, which hug your body more firmly and provide more lateral support. Depending on your height, the EQE system quickly forces you into a seating position where you sit closer to the handlebar. The Lucid is roomier, but the lumbar support adjustment could have been more extensive and there's no reclining seat for better thigh support. However, you also feel relaxed in America.
The Mercedes EQE's optional air suspension absorbs all the bumps and bumps with ease, the only drawback being that the body shakes despite the adaptive shock absorbers. The Lucid and BMW have a firmer suspension, but it's definitely not as comfortable. The BMW's chassis in particular, with its air suspension on the rear axle, remains beautifully balanced when driving over transverse hills.
The Lucid does not have air suspension and the tuning could have been a little better. The American lacks precision in formation, so it lags behind its competitors in terms of comfort.
The Lucid Air is spacious and comfortable, but it also has some drawbacks. How does this end? Read the full comparative test Car review 4. You can buy the magazine from a supermarket, bookstore or in Our web store.
