Despite the gold medal for speed skater Irene Schuten, the Netherlands slipped one place in the medal standings on the penultimate day of the Winter Games in Beijing. With the Swedish women taking the bronze in curling, TeamNL relinquished its fifth place finish to sixth.

The Dutch team’s counter comes to seventeen medals in Beijing: eight gold, five silver and four bronze. In the previous Winter Games in Pyeongchang, TeamNL achieved twenty slices and in Sochi (2014) a record 24. The number of gold medals was the same compared to the previous games, eight each.

Sweden also grabbed its eighth gold on Saturday thanks to men’s curling. With the women’s curling bronze, the country took eighteen medals, one bronze more than the Netherlands.

Norway leads the way with 35 plaques (fifteen gold, eight silver and twelve bronze) and will also win the medal standings. The Scandinavian country has won the most gold medals ever at a single Winter Games.

Germany is No. 2 with 24 medals (eleven gold, eight silver and five bronze). The eleventh gold medal went to Laura Nolte and Deborah Levy, who won the bobsleigh in the two-seater. China, the host country, has overtaken the United States and climbed to third place in the medal table (nine times gold, four times silver, and two times bronze). The ninth gold medal was handed out by pair skaters Sui Wenjing and Han Cong in pair riding.
