FIFA has released its updated list of world rankings after her performance in the women’s soccer tournament at the Tokyo Olympics.
The highly anticipated 2020 Games did not disappoint – records were broken, history and surprising results set a new precedent on the world stage.
Here’s a closer look at the new FIFA international team rankings and how the Olympic Games, along with other tournament offerings, have affected the new rankings.
The United States is still in the lead, but faces a significant drop in points
Despite some surprising defeats in Tokyo and taking third place, the United States maintained its position at the top of the world rankings.
They may have had a disappointing Olympic campaign by their standards, but the Americans remained the most dominant team in the world and managed to add another medal to their ever-growing number. The SheBelieves Cup title earlier this year also helped them maintain their dominance.
However, FIFA reported that the United States fell behind the most points of any country in the latest update. A deficit of 87.04 points was not enough to jeopardize the leader, but it could affect their position going forward unless they return to their usual winning form.
Sweden moves to second place
Sweden had one of the most impressive Olympic Tours of 2020.
Peter Gerhardsson’s team went to the matches after finishing third in the 2019 World Cup in France and winning the silver medal in Japan.
The Swedes stunned the world with their amazing performances, including convincing victories over the United States and Australia. And they missed the gold medal on penalties against Canada.
As a result of their hard work, Sweden jumped three places in the world rankings, after Germany, the Netherlands and France.
Spain reached the top ten for the first time
The Spain women’s national team made history by reaching the top ten for the first time.
Despite not qualifying for the Olympics, the Spaniards jumped two places in the standings. That’s thanks to their unbeaten run so far in 2021 – they’ve won all of their six international friendlies this year and scored 26 goals.
Spain joined the DPRK as newcomers to the top ten.
England drops two places
The Lionesses have been struggling on the international stage lately and their inconsistent performance is reflected in the new FIFA rankings.
England dropped from sixth to eighth after losing two of their three matches this year. The two friendlies scheduled for 2020 have been canceled due to Covid-19 meaning they have lost valuable points there.
Japan and Australia are out of the top ten
After being eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals, the Olympic host country lost two places in the rankings and fell out of the top ten as a result.
They were joined by Suburban Australia, who made solid progress during the Games, but lost the bronze medal in a 4-3 loss to the United States.
Zambia enters the top 100
Zambia made its Olympic debut this summer and continues to make history thanks to captain and clinical striker Babra Banda.
Despite her country’s exit from the group stage, the 21-year-old finished third on the goal list with six goals.
Thanks to the efforts of both Panda and Zambia, they are among the top 100 companies for the first time in the country’s history.
