The Council of Government Advisors and the New Institute presented the exhibition with great enthusiasm this afternoon Netherlands on the drawing board: 100 years of future ideas opened. This exhibition offers visitors the opportunity not only to look back 100 years, but also 100 years forward and discover future visions then and now regarding the spatial planning of the Netherlands.
Holland is on the drawing board
Spatial planning for the Netherlands is once again on the drawing boards of governments and architects. They are trying to find an answer to major social and environmental challenges that affect us all, such as climate change, housing, energy transition, and social justice. The Netherlands has a long and pioneering tradition in spatial planning and design. How did designers from the past deal with the challenges of their time? What solutions did they see, and what worldviews lay behind them? By connecting the present, the past and the future, the exhibition demonstrates that we can draw inspiration from the past to solve today’s spatial challenges.
How do we want to live together?
The exhibition is organized around four themes: future images of the Netherlands, with broad national plans for the long term. Metamorphoses, about the changing view of nature and landscape. Living together, about housing and the question of how we want to live together in the future. and Inspraak!, about residents’ participation in the design of their living environment.
Opening programme
The December 8 program included a series of quick tours through the exhibition, the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at the National Collection’s vaults, and a visit to the mini Ministry of the Future. The opening was graced by Chief Government Architect Francisco Finestra and Eric Chen, Director of the Niue Institute. The Chief Government Architect spoke, among other things, about the future of the spatial design sector. And this future is bright because the efforts of architects, city planners, landscape architects and interior designers are needed more than ever.
“Designers play a crucial role in seeing and imagining the future. Designers connect social issues and are able to offer visions with just a few strokes of paper. Visualizations capture very clearly the future we can move towards.” Francesco Finestra
Mini Ministry of the Future
A miniature Ministry of the Future can also be seen at the exhibition. This is an innovative synthesis that makes ideas across generations known, tangible and actionable. Through an interactive console, visitors move the buttons of the Dutch future and put themselves in the shoes of future generations. The mini-ministry was designed by Verveeld Verwar and designer Hugo Nagtzaam on behalf of the Council of Government Advisors and the Dutch Design Foundation.
