Tallon Grepe secured a place in the second round of the grass tournament in Rosmalen. The world number 38 needed three sets to get rid of Swede Mikael Ymir, who is 24 places behind in the world ranking: 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
After 1 hour and 47 minutes, the Greek track used its second game point. He finished the game with a header.
The Greek track was not to be feared by Ymir in the first set. The Dutchman served hard and had two service periods. He finished the set after half an hour with an ace.
However, Ymir entered the match better in the second set, and took a break at 3-2. That was enough to win the group. In the third set, the Dutch No. 2 recovered and reduced the burden of mistakes. With a forehand, he dominated, as in the early stages. With the support of the audience, he convincingly won the third set.
In February, the Greek track (26) faced Ymir at the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam. Then it became 7-6 (7) 7-5 for the Dutchman. Ymer has recently been coached by Robin Haase, who is still active as a doubles player. Haas was in the playing area with the Swede.
For a place in the quarter-finals, the Greek track will compete against Frenchman Arthur Rendereknik or Alexei Popyrin from Australia. Last year, the Greek track in Roosmalen lost in the second round in two tiebreaks to Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
The Greek track is the only Dutch one still active in the men’s singles. Gijs Brouwer was eliminated on Monday, while defending champions Tim van Rijthoven and Botic van de Zandschulp canceled just before the tournament.
Patinama Kirkov has already finished
Leslie Patinama Kerkhove was eliminated in the first round in Rosmalen. The only Dutch entry in the women’s singles had to concede a 1-6, 4-6 advantage over Australian Kimberly Pearl, world No. 117.
Arantxa Rus, the best tennis player in the Netherlands, will not participate in Rosmalen. She preferred to play longer on clay.
Bad luck for Schuurs
In doubles, he forced Demi Schurz to withdraw. Her Belgian doubles partner, Elise Mertens, has a back injury and is no longer working. Schuurs (29) and Mertens (27) are ranked first in doubles. They won their first match 6-2, 6-2 on Monday. Schurz and Mertens won the championship in 2018.
