The United States strongly condemned on Sunday the Iranian missile attack on the city of Irbil in northern Iraq. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States will support Iraq and hold Iran accountable.
Erbil was hit on Saturday night, Sunday, by 12 ballistic missiles, fired at the US consulate, according to Kurdish security forces in northern Iraq. But according to US sources, the consulate and the US bases near it were not damaged. Several other buildings were damaged.
Iran later admitted to being behind the missile attack on Erbil. According to a statement issued by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Iranian official media, the attack targeted Israeli “strategic centers”. A few days ago, Israel killed two members of the Revolutionary Guards in Syria. Iran had already announced retaliation by then.
On Sunday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi stressed that his country should not become a place where foreign powers “settlement their accounts.”
