According to Kurt Campbell, US Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, the US is coming up with an “ambitious” plan for trade relations with Taiwan. Details of the plan will be revealed sometime in the next few days.
It was previously known that US forces would cross the Taiwan Strait in the coming weeks.
The statement followed China’s angry reaction to Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan last week. Beijing then conducted its largest-ever military maneuvers around the island, which China considers a renegade province. The visit of the speaker of the US House of Representatives is in line with current Washington policy, according to the White House.
Taiwan accused China of using Pelosi’s visit as a pretext for military maneuvers. According to Taipei, these occur in preparation for an invasion.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry thanked the United States for its support in a statement on Saturday. She also referred to US efforts to maintain security in the Taiwan Strait and peace in the region.
