The heat released ensures that it is 1.4 degrees warmer in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. Northern Europe has been particularly lucky with AMOC. Normally it should be colder at this latitude.
Rahmstorf continues: “This is a catastrophe that we must avoid at all costs. Once it stops, this current will likely remain absent for a thousand years or more. Recent studies show that the risk of its occurrence is much greater than I thought.”

Then it will not get warmer in northern Europe, but colder: it will cool by a maximum of 3 degrees every decade. In the Netherlands, the temperature will be 10 to 15 degrees colder in winter. Consider the average temperature in February of -5. Summer will also be about 5 degrees cooler.
According to calculations, the chance of AMOC collapse before 2050 is about 60 percent. The only way to prevent this is to combat global warming, i.e. emit less carbon dioxide.
