After Donald Trump, some American celebrities are once again ready for political action. They have a lot of recognizable names, but the management experience is often more difficult.
From Ronald Reagan to Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger. From comedian Al Franken to singer Sonny Bono, from TV presenter Jerry Springer to businessman and TV star Donald Trump. The United States has a rich history of celebrities aspiring to new careers in politics. Some have more success than others. George Takei, world famous Mr. Solo from the TV series Star TrekFor example, he has had more success as an actor across the galaxy than as a politician in California.
But the list of stars could grow in the near future. Because in California, transgender former Olympic champion Caitlyn Jenner is running for governor. And in Texas, Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is busy lobbying for the position as well. In New York City, Andrew Yang, a businessman who rose to prominence with his 2020 bid for president, is one of the leading contenders for the Democratic Party’s mayoral nomination.
Administrative experience
None of these American celebrities lack name recognition. They can certainly attract a large audience, but their lack of experience in public office could be a problem for them. Turns out Donald Trump is an unparalleled social media phenomenon and no one has been more controversial than him. But there is doubt, to say the least, whether the Donald is such a strong president in terms of substance.
It’s also not easy for a TV star to shine in often dull politics, believes Daniel Ketchel, who was chief of staff to Schwarzenegger, the Austrian bodybuilder who became a Hollywood star. Schwarzenegger also became governor of California in 2003 for two terms. “I think people look at celebrities now and think we just elected a famous president and we were all stressed out all the time,” Ketchel told the AP.
Caitlyn Jenner
Jenner, the decathlon gold medalist who is perhaps best known as a member of the world-famous Kardashian family, began her campaign last week to challenge Democrat Gavin Newsom. With the support of 3.5 million Twitter followers and nearly 11 million Instagram fans, Jenner’s entourage believes her chances will be great. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an example of this big success Who went far into politics. But he had management experience because before becoming governor, the actor was active as chairman of President George H.W. Bush’s Council on Fitness and Sports. Schwarzenegger was also married to Maria Shriver, a member of the Kennedy family.
Ronald Reagan, often ridiculed early in his career, was more experienced than often thought. He was president of the Screen Actors Guild, a powerful union for film and television actors, and learned to negotiate hard there. Jesse Ventura, the professional wrestler who became governor of Minnesota, was not a natural politician, but he nonetheless turned out well: He surrounded himself with very experienced lieutenants.
