Global power is changing, and so are the world’s 15 largest economies. In about thirty years, in 2050, China will be the largest, and Indonesia is on its way as well.
For decades, the United States has led the world as the largest economy on Earth. But the global economy is preparing for a historic change of the guard.
The largest economies in the world in 2050
In 2022, Goldman Sachs published an extensive study on the history and future of the global economy. It depicts the picture from 1980 to 2075 and offers surprising insights. Is it time to move permanently to Bali?
If we look back to 1980, the United States was at the top, and the Netherlands is still among the 12 largest economies in the world. At that time, just as twenty years later in 2000, Japan was in second place. But from that point on, economic growth accelerated in China, which ranked second for the first time in 2022.
China and Indonesia are ahead
By 2050, the United States will lose for the first time, and China will be the proud leader of the list of the world’s largest economies. In fact, a changing of the guard is already expected between 2030 and 2040. Notable newcomers include India and Indonesia. In 2075, even Nigeria, a country with a rapidly growing population, is in the top five. Russia, which is currently investing heavily in Africa, is among the five countries with the lowest decline. Europe is also losing its way.
These are the forecasts of Goldman Sachs, the second largest investment bank on the planet. In addition to studies, there are also opinions, including those of geopolitical analyst and writer Peter Zeehan. He predicts that China will collapse in the next decade.
